From Boy to Girl: Writing Miruku’s Journey

Miruku Sugimura is not just the protagonist of The Great Reformation—he is its heart. When I began writing Miruku’s story, I wanted to create a character who would challenge traditional ideas of identity and strength.
At the start of the novel, Miruku is a confident young boy, a star on the soccer field. But when a sudden medical revelation reveals his true gender, Miruku’s world is turned inside out. As societal roles shift around him, Miruku must rediscover who he is—not just as a girl, but as a person navigating a new reality.
Writing Miruku was an emotional journey. His struggles, triumphs, and relationships reflect the universal human experience of growth and self-discovery. I hope readers will see a bit of themselves in Miruku and be inspired to embrace change in their own lives.
