The Great Reformation
The Story Behind The Great Reformation: Redefining Gender and Power
What inspired The Great Reformation? When I first began writing this novel in Japanese, I wanted to challenge the most fundamental aspects of society: our understanding of identity and power. What if the dynamics of dominance and submission were reversed? What if intelligence and capability were not divided equally between genders?
This question led me to create a world where the roles of men and women are entirely flipped. It’s a story of transformation—personal, societal, and global. Miruku’s journey, from a confident young soccer star to a girl discovering her place in this brave new world, mirrors the upheaval faced by humanity in the wake of the Great Reformation.
While the story delves into speculative fiction, it also reflects real-world struggles for equality and self-discovery. I hope readers will find themselves asking: What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be free?
